Invasion of the Pod People ...

I like coffee.

Not just instant but ground coffee, and different roasts as well.

At home I can drink a fair few cups of coffee in a day and have a small cafetiere which serves me well. But there’s a part of me that would like a coffee machine.

Perhaps it is the memory of Lorenzo at the helm of his pink expresso maker at the New Piccadilly Cafe which makes me yearn for a Gaggia but I know in my heart that I wouldn’t get the use from it.

I am considering one of the coffee pod machines like a Senso but the number of systems, all of which use different pods and offer different flavours makes the wars between betamax and VHS or Blu-ray and HD seem easy to understand.

I’m off to make a very large expresso and try to make sense of it all…

Hello Mr Jottings! - Just discovered your blog - very good! Coffee machines go on take the plunge!! - Consider a Gaggia Classic! - I've had one for 10 years its the best kitchen gadget I own (besides the wife;)!!) - everyone that visits is knocked out - I use Lavazza and organic milk (from our pet reindeer!) and you get the best Cappuccino - as good as any you'd get anywhere - the Classic is the one - the newer trendy plastic ones are not as durable as the water - its like buying a cheap electric shower! I've used it everyday for nearly 10 years they are knockout! - onwards and upwards!

Hello Sorry I forgot to say that a friend bought one of those pod things - even more expensive than a Gaggia but the coffee is nowhere near as good, you can pick up the classic in chrome for around £250 http://www.electricshopping.com/shop/shop.do?pvSKU=74507BCN

When I bought mine the guy at John Lewis said they have been selling these for years and they never get any back for repair - the skill of the machine is dripping the water at 92 degrees over the coffee - this requires a good boiler inside and a steamer that works quickly for the milk. You have to descale them every six months and tipping the wet coffee out after each time is no more time consuming than a cafetiere. They aslo make one the same spec but in white or black plastic instead of metal and I think they are around £200.
Hope this helps! p.s I don't work for Gaggia but am passionate about coffee - and the years of joy we've had from that machine is worth sharing:)
